One of the complaints about living in Vegas as i understand it is that they’ve never had a traditional downtown or urban neighborhood like other cities have. Most of the stand-alone bars like those in East Fremont and perhaps even Downtown 3rd seem to be aimed at people who live there and visitors are a bonus. So with a development like the Downtown project and the jobs generated from something like Zappos the idea is that a lot of people will be working and many perhaps living downtown and there needs to be non-gaming, non-attractions for them to spend their leisure time/money. This is also why the Smith center is such a big deal for downtown Las Vegas, but for residents – not tourists.

I realize the target for your podcast is tourists/visitors. Some of your listeners who just go to Vegas for the spectacle or to gamble, eat well, and/or stay in nice places for less $$ than you spend elsewhere (like my wife & I) might not understand the nature and scope of development around Fremont. It also might not be apparent that it is primarily for urban renewal/revitalization and not related to tourism.

So just throwing in another point of view. Enjoying your show and glad I found it.

Aw well, another great show anyway.

Player Location Security

Nevada interactive gaming regulations and federal law require a player to be within Nevada when they enter the real money action at Ultimate Poker. When a real money user logs into the client they will receive a notification through their cell phone. The tower that locates the user’s cell phone location will report this back to the site’s security department. Once it is verified that a user is located within Nevada, they will be allowed to play. This process takes only a few seconds.

The process also requires that a player possess a cell phone. A land line does not appear to be sufficient.

Verizon Mobile has yet to participate in this verification system. Until they do, Verizon customers will not be able to play at Ultimate Poker. Other CDMA carriers are accepted, including Sprint, Virgin and T- Mobile.

I was recently looking for a photo and came across the picture of you, Chris, Michele and me. It made me smile. I too hope we get to repeat that afternoon soon.

I didn’t really get that the caller was looking for that discussion. He was pretty specific in asking about what percentage of our income we take to Vegas. I fail to see any benefit in discussing it—either for us or for listeners, so I have no problem punting on that question.

Always love the podcast and this episode in particular had me reminiscing about our meetup on Freemont about a year ago where we got to hear that wild cat get skinned alive/Vince Neil warm up. Who/whatever made that sound, it hurt my feelings. Hopefully we’ll see you there again soon.

That said, I certainly don’t expect the show to give me gambling lessons…

And as a Detroiter, I echo your comments on the chili fries. We are just lucky enough to always have access to them. Detroit is a short flight from the Twin Cities! Its no vegas but we have casinos, multiple Andiamo’s and of course plenty of coney dog joints.

Of course, Aria could/should be known as the death-ray resort… Too bad they fixed it, I loved reading about people having their plastic bar cups melting poolside.

If only there were some sort of website that tracked ongoing alcohol-related venues in the Fremont Street area…

An iOS or Android device on Wi-Fi will last longer on its battery than when on a 3G/LTE connection so if you’re in an area that has Wi-Fi, it’s one way to save your battery. This is especially true if you’re in an area with poor cellular service because in that case, the device has to increase power to the radios to maintain that connection.

Harrahs moved their poker room just yesterday. I’m not sure if they had even publicized the fact that they were moving.

I dropped by there last night, just hours after the move. They now have 7 tables. The room is right up against the Strip, right inside the Northern most entrance. So as soon as you walk across the Strip from The Mirage, or walk across the alley from Casino Royale, it’s right there.

It’s no longer an enclosed room like it was before, but they should now get a ton of pedestrian traffic. You pretty much can’t walk through Harrahs without walking right by it.

However, we ran into problems trying to use the Viva myVegas app. The idea is for you to scan QR codes (some of which are available on their Facebook page) at places in Vegas to get chances to spin the same wheel you get when you visit the myVegas game every day. We were at Monte Carlo at some point and decided to walk to NYNY, where there were supposedly QR codes stashed around the place. I went to the mLife desk to ask how I could find these, and the boothling had no idea; she called her manager who also had never heard of it and seemed to think me a little nuts. On the app, it said there was a code at Nine Fine Irishmen, so we went over there. We were there before it opened, but a hostess was there and she instantly knew what I was talking about. She said that the QR code appeared at the bottom of your receipt after you’d eaten there, and she thought that it was the same sort of thing at the NYNY bars owned by MGM. So, you can get extra spins of the wheel, but you have to, essentially, pay for them using this app.

Sorry for the nerddom, but thought I’d give people a heads-up.

PS: Heather also made us a shot that tasted exactly like a white gummi bear.
