Tim, Vegas Mate to find out where one can find a cheap hooker in Las Vegas (18 min mark)...where can't one be found is the question.

I want Vegas Mate to have a safety shield mode with easy panic button activation.

Jumping to Long Hauling. I sincerely have little doubt that driverless car technology will become common in 5 to 7 years. Probably 5.

The laws will evolve, and I forsee cab drivers in Las Vegas, being replaced with trip expediters.

The cab would still have a driver (as an emergency backup), but the driver will leave the driving to the control system, help with luggage, and talk with the passengers. Such a person could be paid minimum wage, which except for some days in December is less than what a Las Vegas cab driver makes.

When this occurs, there will be no more long hauling.

The cab companies will make less from the the loss of long hauling, but they will pay less.

Driverless (Autonomous) Car Technology will also reduce cab accidents drastically. By my calculations, every Las Vegas cab is in an accident by the end of its second year in service. Not all major, but still alarmingly high.

Cab companies will enjoy increased profit from the greatly reduced number of accidents once their cabs are driven by computer modules instead of humans.

Once autonomous cabs are in operation in Las Vegas (my educated expectation is 2018) passengers will benefit in at least 2 ways.

1-No more long hauling or other route related rip offs.
2-Less chance of being injured in an accident; they will go from being common to being very rare.

The cab companies would make the change even if it did not benefit the passengers, but it will.

Thanks, Hundys, for playing my rambling comments on this episode. Funny that you should mention "Grease 2." I'd be all over a "Cool Rider" slot.

I was also surprised that the Mirage didn't give any notice about the O'Shea's garage implosion. No voicemail, no note under the door, nothing. Are they pretending that LINQ construction doesn't exist?

did yiu happen to see any of the "reality" show called "Escape Routes"? it aired weekly (and weakly) on NBC Saturday nights with six episodes, the finale having been a week ago and fetaurng contestents doing zip lines in Vegas. Looked to me like the lines went from Mandalay Bay, possibly over to Excaliber and maybe some others (im half blind so pay very little atention to me) but it looked pretty intesnse actually. The show was really a 6 hour long commercial for Ford. The 2 girls that came in second on the show are coworkers of mine. they excelled on the zip lines (not suprising being from Boulder) but came in last at all the other tasks. there is probably video clips available. google "Escape Routes". i enjoy your podcast, someday Ill get the nerve to do a trip report. going next weekend. keep up the great work!

There are still parts of Speed on site. The northern section where it entered the building is still in place.

I have to disagree on the cabbie comments. Sure there are some drivers that should be in a different job but the majority of my experience (10 rides every trip) has been positive.

It's possible that only part of Speed has been removed. It seems odd that they'd drag it out, but with Sahara a lot of things don't make sense.

Speed: The Ride

I drove by Sahara on Thursday and can swear I still saw the roller coaster standing. Someone may need to confirm that it's gone or still there. Happy Sunday!

Was that a real king sized bed, or a "hotel" king sized bed. My initial thought before reading any of the comments was that that the bed looked kind of small. I am disappointed if king sized beds are shrinking in hotel rooms now!

O'Sheas has closed. I got a green O'Sheas shot glass as a souvenir hand out. I posted a few photos on my blog and sooner or later may get to uploading video content from O'Sheas closing.

At 2AM, 10 hours from now, the old Flamingo garage is to be imploded.

Also of minor note, yesterday the old (long defunct) Holy Cow casino at the corner of LAs Vegas Blvd and Sahara was knocked down. That is the building which at one time was going to be the Ivana Trump building.

Al

Please don't let me give you the wrong impression, I thought the IEB show was one of the best experiences I've ever had in Las Vegas, warts and all. I'm at the age where I realize the road doesn't go on forever and I want to see the old performers while I still can. The IEB performers were mainly lounge acts, rather than showroom acts. Just happy to be able to perform for an audience one last time.

I agree with you regarding Don Rickles. We saw him within the last couple years at the Orleans and he still provides a highly entertaining show. We saw Frank Sinatra Jr. there recently and it was almost as if a professor was telling us about, and aharing the nuance of, big band music. He was a guy who loved every note each member of the 20 piece orchestra was playing and wanted to make sure the audience got their best effort. Professional entertainers in action.

When I was young I used to hate it when "the old folks" would start telling tha same stories thay had been telling since before I was born. Made me roll my eyes and want to leave the room. Now their voices are still and I wish I coud hear them just one more time.

Hi Jeff,

I considered going to the IEB show at the 'Orleans, Sounds like it was a bit of a disaster. Yet, I really was curious about some of the older performers, so thanks for sharing your take on the night. Rickles still plays the 'Orleans regularly, and as of this writing, I can assure you his act is still excellent. I would reccomend seeing him, and I think we can agree he's a bona-fide link to old Vegas.

Rich Little may have become irrelevant very quickly, but it happened about 25 years ago. His impression may be solid, but they're all of dead people, which is probably a big reason for said irrelevance.

Regarding Rich Little: I was born in 1958, and when I was young my connection to Las Vegas might have been a "Dusk to Dawn" show at the Twilight Garden Drive Inn that would be Frank as Tony Rome, Dean as Matt Helm, Sammy & Peter Lawford as Salt & Pepper, closed out with Ocean's 11. As I got older and could stay up late on weekends and in the summer, I would also see Shecky, Liberace, Buddy Hackett, or Rich Little on Carson. Other outlets would be Merv, or The Dean Martin Variety Show, and later, Celebrity Roasts. Rich Little was a regular, as well as a steady performer. His impressions were great then and the subjects always approved.
I have many of the Celebrity Roast DVD's and watch them every couple months. I always laugh and notice how funny and un-PC they are. As well as how almost all of the guests are dead. I also notice how good the stage presence and timing was for those aging performers back then. Even when they were on the way out (and knew it) they still "had it".
I had the honor of being in Las Vegas a couple years ago when an "Italian Earthquake Benefit Show" was staged at the Orleans Showroom. I drug my 15 years younger wife with me to see it. Most of the performers were old men with Ill fitting toupees, dust on their tuxedo shoulder and routines that featured Sonny Liston (no kidding). People I think I saw on the Ed Sullivan Show, along with Topo-Gigo. The big Stars were Rich Little, Charlie Callas and Shecky Greene. Little performed very early in the show and did a tight 10 minutes. Callas (who has since died) did an incoherent 15 minutes that seemed like an hour, and Shecky did a rambling 15 minutes that seemed very bitter and calculating.
I'm not saying Rich Little is my kind of guy, but it seems like he has become irrelevant very quickly. His political jokes are way too republican for me, but his impressions are still solid and funny. I think it is heartbreaking that his younger wife took her own life last year (I fear pain & painkillers were a factor) and wonder why his shows at the Golden Nugget last year sold so poorly that they closed after a week, or so?
He might not matter to the younger set, but for those of us over 50, Rich Little might be the best link to the "Classic Vegas" of our youth.

I know you know this and forgot it during the show, so let me be the first dick-weed to remind you: A division of Goldman Sachs bought the Stratosphere and other casinos from Carl Ichan in about 2006. Goldman is the lender on the LVH property and is trying to forclose on it currently from the defaulted operator Colony Capital. They are going back and forth in court at this date. It is assumed that Goldman wants to have their casino operator dvision take over operations at the LVH after the foreclosure is completed, and that operator uses the street address of the Strat on their business correspondence.

One glaring hole in your reporting is the inclusion of such fine establishments as McDonalds, Panda Express, Subway, and of course Liquor Expo. Sign me up for the newest destination on the strip...ME LIKEY!

The shower was very spacious. The bed was king size. Although I could have done with out the decorative pillows, I like having a lot of regular pillows, so I was quite happy.

Thanks, Dab.

Very nice. Shower looks a little small, but you were alone, unlike the Secret Service. Not sure about the grain on the marble in the washroom, a little loud I think.

You are correct about he pillows. A bit of overkil I think. Is that a Queen bed?

If you wanted to rock climb as part of your visit ( I have a client who loves Vegas soley for the paths at Red Rock) it would be ideal.

A little to far off the beaten path for me though.

I was fortunate enough to take advantage of the Tropicana loss rebate promo that was discussed in the podcast for a nice $310 profit a few months ago.

A few other properties have similar promos going so it helps to know how to best take advantage of them. Here is a link to a blog where optimal strategy for these is talked about.

I have a lot of friends who went to medical school (major partiers for some reason... maybe it's the 36 hour shifts). Anyway, they told me of doing exactly the same thing after a night of partying. Their living room was often filled with people with IVs in their arms in the morning. Apparently it really works. There have been days where I would have gladly paid five hundy just to feel better.

Vegas Podcast-a-Palooza died when we pulled out of the 2011 event and The Strip quit producing shows. Fortunately, in their infinite wisdom, Chuck and Hunter saw it as a chance to do something new, incorporating the Vegas Tripping crew. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of Vegas Podcast-a-Palooza, the Vegas Internet Mafia Family Picnic was born.

Help me understand. Is the palooza and picnic the same gig, just rebranded? Was there a licensing struggle? Did Hunter change the name on the advise of Tim's therapist? Does the answer lie in the closing credits of Pulp Fiction?

Not yet, but there's plenty of time for that. I think sitting out a year was good, as I'm in a different state of mind about things now. I'm feeling much more excitement and much less anxiety than when we decided to participate in Vegas Podcast-a-Paloozas.

This should be tons of fun.

Enjoy the gambling with T&M.

Re: Batman slots though. Been a while since I played it, but if you
are freaked out by all the clowns, can't you change and play as Batman instead to get different art ?

The Wizard of Oz community slots. We had an amazing run on a bank of these, at Ceasars Palace. The group bonus came up continiously. Think all four players walked away with at least $300 each. Was a lucky day!

I think Chris is right. Looking forward to High Limit Gambling with Tim & Michele, the $100 slots edition.

Enough with the "here's what you ought to do" comments.

What Tim and Michele ought to do is enjoy Las Vegas however they see fit. They should spend what they want to spend, and study as much (or as little) as they want to study. Otherwise, the terrorists win.

O.K. let's talk gambling with Tim and Michele.

Although I do enjoy the segments, you really should study the machines before you start playing.

For example, you should know that you need the yellow symbol in Batman/Joker to get into the road race, you should know that the miles mean SFA in LOTR unless you get a bonus, etc.

The problem is that you two, especially Tim are not truly seasoned slot players so you don't stud the machines as we do you just play them. That's the fun of the games.

And yes my wife does think I am ctazy that I study the games as I play.

Hope you had a great trip and the view from the back tower is nice at the Cosmo.

Ok re-read its not $100 food credit but $100 of food deal offers, but still pretty good.

Or they are offering a three night package for $139 which includes 2 free buffets, the $100 food vouchers, welcome cocktails, 2 for 1 show tickets, $10 slot play and 2 entries to fitness centre.

Not bad really. Though personaly I think they should do a deal with the monorail and offer some sort of free monorail passes with room deal to entice.

LVH stepping up its promo offers.

Pretty amazing really, as last time we stepped into the Hilton
was about four years ago and that was with minimum gambling.

Just received an offer for four nights for $139, which includes
$100 food credit and no resort fees ( to be used by end of Dec ).

Need to go back to Vegas NOW!

Tim/ Michele,
This show hit on 2 key points for my next trip in June. First, your Vegas experience keeps changing and evolves over the years. This trip my wife and I find ourselves planning a few different things. One, a trip to downtown. We haven't been downtown since 1997, which was the first year we started going to Vegas.

The other is we want to go to a comedy show. We go to a lot of shows but we have seen very few comedians. We are completely out of the loop at who as you put it are the good circuit comedians. So far here are my choices for the timeframe we will be in Vegas.
1. Kathleen Madigan at the Mirage
2. Brad Garrett plus Tom Mctigue and Nicholas Anthony
3. Ron White at the Mirage
Do you have an opinion on any of these or some other comedy venue?
Thanks for your feedback.... have a great trip next week... so what I mean is..... win money and drink too much.

Good interview, Tim. I feel like Stevens could have given you the interview Monday night, but held off in order to give the local "big boys" more of an exclusive. Can't say as I blame him, but it seems like he can get more love on a daily basis from your site, Facebook fan page and other sites belonging to the Vegas Internet Mafia.
I think you do a good job on a daily basis, and I am thankful for all your efforts. And I think there are thousands who feel the same way.

I've been a big fan of the Stevens' work since they came to Las Vegas a few years ago. I heard Mike Brandenberg tell the Global Gaming Magazine podcast about his first meeting with the Stevens and found it telling, as it related to the Stvenes' very quiet, in depth research and their casual first meeting. It seems to me that the Stevens' toook a bit of a scattershot approach to Las Vegas business when they first entered the market (buying minority stakes in the Golden Gate, then the Riviera and a majority in the 51's baseball team). But, it seems like they have become more focused on downtown Las Vegas recently, and I think they are going to become good operators there whose best days are ahead of them.

Fitzgerald's, and O'Sheas, two Irish themed casinos going away at about the same time. Coincidence? I think not.

I do like Sigma Derby.

Are there any Irish themed casinos remaining in Las Vegas?

Just a side note, in case anyone is interested. Just saw Caesars Online Casino advertised on telly ( in Alcatraz break ) in the Uk. Really pushing the Vegas connection and brand. Total Rewards emblem is shown on the front page of the site, so might have a go at signing up at some point and see if points are earned.

Page I'm looking at is www.caesarscasino.com/tv/tvadcasino/

I always thought Detroit and Vegas were very similar in a lot of ways. Both blue-collar towns where one industry runs everything. Whether or not that warrants a Detroit-themed casino is a whole other question.

Funny that it happens in a casino that used to be owned by Don Barden, who sued Detroit because they wouldn't give him a license to open a casino there.

Maybe the D stands for DBag.
Maybe they will relocate to D Street in Las Vegas. (Bad street.)
Maybe the letter D is an upgrade from the letter F. If they do really good they can become the letter A.
Maybe they can't wait to be cute with their restaurant ads, D-Licious, D-Lightful, etc.
Maybe they fucked up and it was supposed to be alphanumeric. Maybe it is supposed to be D1. It can't be A1 because the steak sauce people got that one locked. Bastards.

I recall that the Stevens family fortune was made supplying nuts, bolts and fasteners to American car makers. Detroit iron, which clearly reflects the choice in autos during Las Vegas post-war glory years. Add in Moe Dalitz and the Teamsters Union investment, as well as the high standard of living afforded to the "working man" at a level seen in Las Vegas and Detroit above almost any other city in the world, and I can see the link between the two metro areas. Especially as it relates to the gritty hard-working base for the shiny, glitzy image projected to the world.
The Rat Pack glory image of "Vegas" is still a big finned, sparkly, brightly colored Cadillac.

Could you please ask them "WTF?" How in the HELL does anyone think Detroit is even remotely as interesting (or exciting) as Las Vegas? I get the "D" for downtown, but Detroit? Maybe it's a prank?

I am so excited for the Monday evening bonus podcast, that I went out and bought some Depends - just in case. If I don't use them, I can raffle them off at a casino on Water Street in nearby Hendertucky; home of the 10 cent (maybe it's a quarter by now) craps roll.

Hello Tim and Michelle, and everyone else,

It has been a while since I have blogged, but I have been getting back up to speed the last few weeks.

I wanted to first announce my return to blogging on the podcast, but something of incredible minutiae has arisen which warrants everyone being aware.

And FiveHundy is my choice of saying something, in addition to my own blog, because FiveHundy has never cried to me for putting in a link.

White Cross Drugs is closing at the end of this month. Visit now. Congratulate yourself if you already have.

I have just put up a post about White Cross Drugs closing, you may visit it at:

http://royvegas.blogspot.com/2012/03/white-cross-drugs-is-closing-las-vegas.html

Hello again, and I will be in touch soon.

By the way, I also put on my site a previously unreleased walkthrough video of The Stardust on closing day.

I am blogging on a high speed connection now, so I can do larger files than I used to.

Good Luck and GodSpeed
